For this assignment, my group and I decided to focus on a hallway space in the ENVD building. This hallway is specifically used for the media production department of CU, and consists of 3 classrooms, a check out closet, a desk, and 2 benches. The space is very bland and unexciting. After my first experience of sitting in the space, I immediately realized that lots of people come and go through this space, while some people sit and stay for a while. Whether they are waiting for their next class or they are just catching up on some homework, people strangely decide to sit in this mundane space.
I looked around the hallway and thought about ways that it could be enhanced. I thought of changing the color of the walls, adding stools and more assets to the desk along the wall, and maybe rearranging the furniture to be of more convenience to the students using the space. After meeting with my group, we decided to split up our responsibilities. I would be responsible for enhancing the desk space.
I decided to sketch out some ideas for transforming the desk space. Here are some of my initial sketches.
I first decided to focus on the stools.
I couldn't decide if I wanted to add high stools or normal chairs. After taking measurements during my second visit to the space, I realized that the wooden desk was actually too high to have normal chairs. So I decided to go with stools. These stools are imagined to be similar to the silver metal ones that we have in the TAM building.
Then, I focused on the lamp portion. Did I want high lamps, low lamps, or medium sized lamps? I decided to go with the medium sized and adjustable ones...
I then wanted to add everything together from a point of view where you could see it all. I added the idea of paintings and student work to this sketch as well. I think it would be great for students to be able to showcase their work in the hallway, and have their peers see what work they are up to and give them some feedback on what they think.
Next, I created a visualization on adobe illustrator.
I enjoyed creating this on illustrator because the 3D effect makes it seem real and possible. I thought that by adding black walls it could create a more modern feel through the hallway, but now that I think about it- I feel like black is a hard color to be around when trying to do work. So I think that another color, like light blue or white would be a good color for the wall since they are calming colors.
Finally, I created my last prototype, from the perspective of standing on the other side of the hallway looking directly at the desk.
Here it is!
